OpenAI has launched a tailored version of its ChatGPT software specifically designed for use by the US government. Known as ChatGPT Gov, this AI chatbot is capable of assisting with various tasks including summarization, translation, and handling “non-public, sensitive information” on secure self-hosted cloud platforms. The government personnel can create and share custom GPT models for specialized tasks, aided by an admin console for IT teams. Over 90,000 users from more than 3,500 federal, state, and local government agencies have already engaged with ChatGPT since 2024, utilizing its services for AI training, coding, translations, and more. While concerns regarding the security of AI usage in government settings persist, OpenAI emphasizes compliance with its Usage Policy for ChatGPT Gov. The software’s capabilities were showcased by creating plans, translations, and undergoing federal testing. OpenAI is working with the government to expedite the approval process for implementing ChatGPT Enterprise in sensitive data environments. CEO Sam Altman’s donation to President Trump’s inauguration fund, along with Microsoft’s partnership, also underscores the significance of modern software tools in government operations.
