Seagate has unveiled its largest hard drive to date, the 32TB Exos M series model ST32000NM003K, just weeks after Western Digital introduced its own 32TB HDD. The Exos M series includes a 30TB CMR model and the 32TB SMR model, utilizing Shingled Magnetic Recording technology. These drives offer high data transfer speeds up to 6 Gbps and are built with Seagate’s Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) platform combined with Mozaic 3+ technology, boasting 3TB per platter. Seagate claims the new drives are three times more power-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to previous models. Despite initial skepticism, Seagate assures the reliability and quality of its HAMR technology, with a reported MTBF of 2.5 million hours. Production is set to ramp up by 2025 after passing qualification tests.
