Collaboration and perseverance were key in developing the Dynabook LIFEBOOK WU5/J3, an ultra-light laptop featuring innovative IGZO technology. The COVID-19 impact accelerated the demand for portable laptops. The 634-gram device aimed to redefine possibilities in mobile computing.

Amidst challenges, Dynabook met the urgent market demand driven by the pandemic’s remote work shift. The journey to create the lightest 14-inch laptop displayed determination and innovation. Various innovations, including an IGZO LCD display, a laminated pouch-type battery, and a magnesium-lithium alloy, contributed to achieving the 634-gram target weight. The IGZO panel, developed in collaboration with FCCL, played a significant role in weight reduction.

Technical issues during development, such as uneven brightness and light leakage, were addressed by Sharp’s and Haruki Taguchi’s teams. The final IGZO display was finalized in late September 2024, in time for the product announcement on October 5. The story of the Dynabook LIFEBOOK WU5/J3 showcases how persistence and collaboration can lead to groundbreaking innovations in the world of mobile computing.
