Governments around the world continue to resort to internet shutdowns in various situations such as protests, elections, and exams, impacting both digital rights and economies. The cost of internet shutdowns from 2020 to 2024 reveals alarming figures, with 2022 being the most expensive year at $24.61 billion. In 2024, the total cost reached $7.69 billion, with Pakistan suffering the most significant financial loss. Additionally, 167 shutdowns affected 28 countries and 648.4 million people for a record high of 88,788 hours. Surprisingly, social media blocks decreased amidst widespread shutdowns, highlighting diverse motives behind such actions. VPNs have become crucial for citizens to bypass restrictions, especially as governments target popular platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. As internet censorship persists globally, the battle between access and control intensifies.
