Rugged new OM System camera and lenses are on the way – but meaningful upgrades are needed to restore my faith in the fading brand

OM System, under the leadership of Shigemi Sugimoto, has announced the upcoming release of a new camera and compact, splash & dust-proof lenses in 2025, focusing on outdoor photography. While fans await these additions, there is a sense of caution regarding the lack of significant upgrades or innovations in the micro four thirds system lineup since the acquisition of Olympus four years ago. Despite minor changes in rebranded models, the hope remains for meaningful improvements in future gear. Speculation arises about potential successors to existing models like the OM-5 or the OM-1X, aiming for ruggedness and performance suited for outdoor environments. Anticipation builds for new features or even entirely new camera models that would excite the OM System community in 2025.
