Venezuela restricts TikTok – leaving citizens turning to VPNs

The block on TikTok comes after the app failed to comply with a deadline set by the Supreme Court to appoint a local representative. This isn’t the first time Venezuela has restricted access to social media apps, with previous bans on apps like X and calls for boycotts on WhatsApp. VPNs have become essential for many Venezuelans to access accurate information online amidst these restrictions. The recent TikTok ban follows a hefty fine imposed by the Supreme Court due to concerns over viral challenges on the platform allegedly leading to fatalities. Looking to enforce compliance, the court has demanded TikTok establish a local office and pay the fine.
