Myanmar has recently implemented a new controversial cybersecurity law which stipulates that individuals could face up to six months in prison and fines of up to 2 million kyats (nearly $1,000) for using VPN services without official approval. The law, enacted by the military junta on January 1, 2025, is purportedly aimed at preventing cyberattacks that threaten national sovereignty and stability, and prosecuting cybercrimes. However, concerns have been raised by experts regarding the impact on digital rights like online privacy, freedom of speech, and access to information, amid strict control of the internet following the 2021 coup. The law not only targets VPN usage but also criminalizes various online activities such as fraud and illegal gambling, with potential prison sentences ranging from two to seven years. This move further restricts citizens’ ability to bypass governmental online restrictions, making it increasingly challenging for individuals to navigate the digital landscape freely.
